My reading lesson plan in class

 

               

Session 1 

     

– Speaking Experiment and build new stores of words to communicate in different contexts.

– Speaking. Retell stories, ordering events using story language.  Discuss re-told, traditional and fairy stories.

 

Description:

 

Talk about the structure of the story (situation, problem, resolution). 

Teacher tells the story verbally.

Children discuss with talk partners what makes the verbal retelling interesting – gesture, tone of voice etc. 

Use pictures of main events in the story to help children retell that part of the story. Encourage children to use voices. Record the story as they perform it. Play back to the children and discuss. In discussion with children teacher makes a note of interesting words/story language used on a “living display” wall.  

    

Material:

  • Big book.

  • Pictures of each main event.

  • Digital sound recorder or Dictaphone.

  • Living display wall.

     

Session 1.1

 

Over these weeks play the recording book at the end of the day when the children are getting ready for home .

Session 2

 

– Speaking. Experiment and build new stores of words to communicate in different contexts.

– Group discussion and interaction. Take turns to speak, listen to others’ suggestions.

– Understanding and interpreting texts. Identify the main events and characters in stories. Engaging with and responding to texts. Visualise and comment on characters.

 

Description:

 

Provide children with pictures of the main characters from the text. Discuss who characters are and write describing words for one character.

Split class into groups. Give each group a large picture of a different character with space for annotation. Ask them to repeat the main activity for their character.

Review and discuss descriptions and teacher to add interesting words onto the “living display” wall (+ annotated pictures if space).

 

Session3 

 

– Drama. Explore characters through improvisation and role-play.

– Engaging with and responding to texts.  Visualize and comment on characters.

Description:

Review work done yesterday and the word wall built. Have a selection of characters . Ask class for suggestions of what the character might say. Children to tap on the characters to see what they say. Discuss the content. Use talk partners to come up with own ideas.

Provide simple props. Children select a prop and say a sentence with correct content and voice . Record their speaking online and download their recording.  Photograph the child holding the prop. Then you can create a video with their voices.

 

Material:

  • Camera and online sound recorder (vocaroo)

 

Session  4    

 

– Engaging with and responding to texts.

– Creating and shaping texts. Find and use interesting words and phrases including story language.

– Sentence structure and punctuation.

 

Description:

 

Compose and write simple sentences independently to communicate meaning.

Review work done so far by showing videos of the characters, their sound clips and speech from yesterday .

Choose a story character and write a joint description of the character.

Ask each child to choose another character from the story and write a description.

               

Session 5   

        

– Drama.Explore characters through improvisation and role-play. Act out well known stories using voices for characters.

– Creating and shaping texts. Create short simple texts that combine words with images.

 

Description:

 

Review speaking in Lesson 3.

Tap on some characters to see what they say.

Repeat props exercise with a few children - say a sentence with correct content and voice.

Use talk partners to come up with own ideas.

Use speech bubble sheet. Each child selects a character and writes what they might say in the speech bubble. Share with class.

Material:

  • Blank ‘speech bubble’ sheets.

 

Session 6

– Group discussion and interaction.  Ask and answer questions, offer suggestions, take turns.

– Drama. Explore familiar characters through improvisation and role play. Act out well known stories using voices for characters.

 

Description:

 

Review speech bubbles for characters.

Introduce the puppets.

Using a teacher’s puppet show how you can use your voice and move the puppet at the same time.

Show a clip where possible of a puppet show.

Material:

  • Teacher’s puppet.

  • Puppet show clips : Youtube is the best alternative place to look for these. Some good puppet show clips are the ones produced by Edmonton Public Library Staff, these are based around traditional tales.

 

Session 7

 

-Design and Technology – Puppets.

-Speaking Interpret a text by reading aloud with some variety in pace and emphasis.

– Group discussion and Interaction. Take turns to speak, listen to others’ suggestions and talk about what they are going to do.

 

Description:

 

Children can make their own glove or stick puppets to represent characters in the story being used.

Split the class into groups according to characters. Give time to practice which voices they will use.

Read the story indicating where the groups of children might need to come in and read their ‘part’. Record this online (vocaroo).

Listen through the story as a whole class. Review – can they make it better – how?

  • Big Book

 

Session 8

 

– Group discussion and interaction.  Ask and answer questions, offer suggestions, take turns.

– Drama. Explore familiar characters through improvisation and role play. Act out well known stories using voices for characters

 

Description:

 

Review work on voices and how we can use them to make stories more interesting.

Children work in pairs (with a different character each) and create a simple dialogue (question & answer). Children can write dialogue. Take photographs of the two puppets ‘interacting’ for the next day.

               

Material:

  • Camera.

  • Small whiteboards.

 

Session 9

 

– Group discussion and interaction. Ask and answer questions, offer suggestions, take turns.

– Drama.Explore familiar characters through improvisation and role play.

Act out well known stories using voices for characters

– Creating and shaping texts. Create short simple texts that combine words with images and sounds. (goanimate)

Description:

Each child has a freeze frame photograph. Children in pairs to create and record their dialogue using our online recorder.  The children can also select a music clip from a selection. A question and answer dialogue or more complex dialogue.  (goanimate)

Play the sound recordings to the class with photo displayed .

It is assumed that children will have had a chance to experiment with this software prior to this.

 

Session 10

 

– Creating and shaping texts. Create short simple texts that combine words with images and sounds.

– Sentence Structure and Composition. Compose and write sentences independently to communicate meaning.

– Drama. Explore familiar characters through improvisation and role play. Act out well known stories using voices for characters.

 

Description:

 

Show class sound clips and pictures from yesterday.

Children to work in pairs to record the dialogue for a section of the play.

Children to record dialogue either by play script, speech bubbles, speech marks.  (goanimate)

 

Special session

 

Children to work in small groups to create a puppet show. Time to practice, then present the show to the rest of the class/parents/reception class. Can use the written dialogue from previous lessons.

Material:           

  • Table covered with a cloth.

  • Dialogue from previous lessons
